National Board Certified Teachers

THE "WVFLTA Outstanding Teacher" honor is awarded to those teachers who:

v demonstrate superior ability to foster the study of world languages
and cultures among students of all backgrounds and abilities,

v use effective methods and techniques of instruction,

v participate in professional organizations,

v command the respect and admiration of students, parents and
colleagues, and

v encourage the use of world languages in and out of the classroom.

The WVFLTA Friend of World Languages distinction (originally named the Founder's Award) was established in 2000 to honor a person, currently
a non-educator, who has furthered the cause of world language
education. Its creation was inspired by the SCOLT
(Southern Conference on Language Teaching) Award.

2001 Deborah Brown	...for her years of service as the World Languages Coordinator, WV State Department of Education
2003 Jay Cole Assistant Secretary WV Department of Education and the Arts Mr. Cole is a former student of the 2003 K-12 Outstanding Teacher, James Cimino.	...for his efforts within the framework of International Education establishment of the Commission on International Education* heading the WV delegation to the "Meeting of the States" sponsored by the Asia Society.*

NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and nongovernmental organization. It was formed in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching, creating a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards and integrating certified teachers
into educational reform efforts.
