Recognized by her peers for her passion for French and
German, and her geunine caring for students, Marchetia continues
her work through distance learning after twenty-five years in the
classroom.
Marchetia strives
to engage her students by adopting new materials and technologies,
and is a master at handling the intricacies of teaching multiple
levels in the same class
period.
As co-chair of the
World Language Club at her school she has organized a foreign film
festival month and language awareness days, and has led student
tours to Quebec. She encourages her students to continue
language study post high school, and instills in them a positive
attitude for learning.
A faithful member of WVFLTA, Marchetia also belongs to AATF and
AATG.
As lead teacher for
French and German in her county, she has worked with others to
create opportunities for students and teachers to celebrate
language learning. These include "Le Tour de France" for the
very first National French Week sponsord by AATF, and the 2005
French Immersion Weekend.
She and a colleague
have been copresenters at conferences and professional development
seminars.
Congratulations to Marchetia Bailey for her many years of superior
instruction and dedication to her students and her profession, and
best wishes to her as she continues to inspire students and
colleagues alike in the distance learning format.

Rebecca taught
for eleven years in Kanawha county schools before joining
the faculty at WV State where she has been for six
years. Rebecca consistently
earns the higest student evaluation scores in the
department, and at least one
colleague attributes the increase in the number of students
continuing in the 200
level sequence in large part to Rebecca's encouragement and
advice.
Enthusiastic
and patient, she is both demanding and flexible.
Committed to communicative language teaching practices, Rebecca is
adept
at designing creative and clever activities using power
point pesentations to elicit
descriptive responses.
She has
developed a three-week immersion course in Costa
Rica for her students during winter break that includes a
family stay as well as
language study.
She is the sponsor of
Alpha Mu Gamma, the foreign language
honorary, and directs the language laboratory.
To encourage the use of Spanish beyond the classroom, Rebecca
organizes presentations on Hispanic and Spanish cultures, the "Mesa
española" in the university cafeteria, and lunches and dinners at a
local Mexican restaurant.
A member of WVFLTA for several years, she has served on the
Executive
Committee by virtue of her role as President of AATSP-WV.
She has been active
in the Immersion Weekend of this organization as both
participant and presenter,
and continues to work with the planning committee for this
event.
For her committment to our profession, contributions to our
language teaching community, and for her many teaching
successes, we honor Rebecca Conner.

World Languages and Global Awareness are integral components of the
21st Century Skills Framework!! In 2005 West Virginia became the second state in
the nation to join
The Partnership for 21st
Century Skills.
Governor Manchin and State Superintendent of
Schools, Steven Paine, support this state wide vision
to provide the
skills, knowledge and expertise
students should master in order to succeed in work and life in the new millennium ----
(www.21stCenturySkills.org)
Under this framework World languages is listed as one of the core subjects it is
essential for students to master, and
Global awareness is listed number one under 21st
century interdisciplinary themes that should be woven into core
subjects.
We need to let our administration, parents and
students know that language learning is an integral part of this nationwide iniative! |
